Originally Franhowil was solely owned by Francis Howard Williams (We are sure you will see the link to the affix), and about thirty years ago David Short jointed him on the affix, always aided and abetted by Margaret Short and nieces Lindsey en Joanne McLachlan. In latter years Lindsey and Joanne were included in the affix.
Francis being latterly born into dogs as the family G.S.D. , a wardog called Ikubu with filed teeth, had her litter under the bed, as Francis was being born on the bed at home.
David and Margaret joined him in the hobby about thirty years ago and Lindsey and Joanne were junior handlers as soon as they were big enough to hold a lead.
Francis was fortunate enough to be brought up into a world of stock breeders and was able to learn at the knees of the likes of Thelma Gray, Rossavell, whop left to live in Australia with her son, Hilary Harmer, Edna Rose, Eve Bentic, Copplestone, Nem & Percy Elliot, Peg Litton, Asoka, Winnie Jones, Loofoo to name a few.
Before Schipperkes his breeds were mainly G.S.D’s and Pekingese where he handled many a famous dog including Ch. Asoke Cheruska, known as Jake.
Franhowil were first introduced the schipperkes by Francis, godmother PegLitton of the Asoka kennels and stables. Ch. Asoke Black Jago having already gained his title the Franhowils took his sister and daughter( Ch. Asoka Black Delight and Ch.Asoka Tar Baby) on the gain their titles. Although technically still owned by Peg Litton, Jago Anna & Inka lived with the Franhowils for the rest of their days.
Some will remember the “Memoirs of Jago” which amused many a member during the early years of the newsletter.
Another dog owned by the Franhowils and campaigned to his title was Ch. Cromedyke Dandy Jack, bred by Jenny & Barry Cromarty.
Francis and David spent many hours visiting and talking to people like Anne Chadwick, Hallbower, who follows the same female family lines in her breeding, Rosy Archer, Radash, Sylvia Barton, Sylvadown, and many more. Anne Chadwick had spent many years compiling a historic record of the breed tracing the family lines She was glad to share these records. By the time we got to know Sylvia Barton she was thought to be a lovely eccentric but had a stock of good and healthy schipperkes, highly fertile.
Francis is also fortunate enough to have some of the writing of Mr. Ludford and Sally Nesbit, which were given to him by a dear friend, Elsie Spann. They make interesting reading. They spoke of epilepsy and monorchids in some lines, semi lethal genes and in fertility which was sometimes a problem in some family lines. 99% of those lines have now disappeared.
Armed with the information Francis had gain all his life Franhowil set about a breeding programme. To accomplish everything planned, we knew we had to find somewhere else to live and were lucky enough to be able to live in a place with no close neighbours and plenty of outbuildings. Along with the odd chicken, goose, goat, pig, G.S.D and Lhasa, Franhowil Schipperkes were born. We bred from female lines and bred for healthy dogs free from faults and inherited disease.
We have more British Champions than any other affix(Schippland being the previous holder but 3 of them were bred by others although they held the Schippland affix) Franhowil have been Top Breeders in Schipperkes in the United Kingdom from 1989-1991, 1993-2000 and 2003.
